John is the founder and president of Kabateck Strategies, the premier California public affairs firm focused on helping clients to become more relevant, involved and impactful though strategic positioning and targeted coalition strategies. For the past twenty-five years, he has led strategic coalition development and implementation in California’s public policy and political arenas.
As California Executive Director of the National Federation of Independent Business, California’s leading small business organization, Kabateck was responsible for the recruitment, outreach and involvement of upwards of 23,000 small and independent business owners from sectors including retail, restaurants, manufacturing and agriculture. John also served as Senior Legislative Director and Vice President of the California Restaurant Association, during which time he helped lead successful efforts to mobilize small business restaurateurs and their employees to engage in statewide campaigns addressing small business issues.
Kabateck previously served as Chief of Staff in the California Legislature and as Director of Coalitions for Governor Pete Wilson’s successful re-election campaign and as Wilson’s Chief Deputy Appointments Secretary, where he was responsible for full-time and board/commission appointments spanning more than eight state agencies, including the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency and Trade and Commerce Agency. He was selected by Governor Schwarzenegger to serve as Director of External Affairs, in which he managed staff and operations of five statewide offices and the Governor’s statewide coalitions network, including business, local government and ethnic community outreach efforts.
John is a graduate of the University of Southern California and resides in Sacramento with his wife, Maggie, and two children.
Roy Merrill, FAAMA
Practice Administrator, Rocky Vista Health Center
Roy is a healthcare executive with extensive experience in healthcare finance, operations, network development and oncology. As the Sr. Vice President for Business Operations with Physician Reliance Network, what is today US Oncology, Mr. Merrill was responsible for the business operations of 147 oncology offices, 56 cancer centers and 475 oncologists. He directed all contracting and business matters and has participated in the development of numerous cancer centers nationwide.
From 2001-2002, Roy prepared the strategic business plan for the Anschutz Cancer Pavilion at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He was the Director of Healthcare Provider Consulting for Watson Wyatt Worldwide creating physician and provider networks nationwide. In 1990, he developed and owned Colorado’s first free-standing diagnostic imaging center. He served as Chief Financial Officer of Colorado’s largest hospital system from 1978 until 1990.
He is a graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington, a US Navy veteran, and a Fellow in the American Academy of Medical Administrators.

Colleen is the Director of Advocacy Relations and an Associate Editor of Women Magazine since its founding in 2007.
Women is a premier health magazine focusing on the total health of women and their families with a major emphasis on the prevention and management of cancer. In every issue, Women publishes regular features on bone and joint health, heart health, GI health, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer prevention, screening and management, as well as nutrition, exercise, and spiritual and emotional topics. Colleen, a graduate of Villanova University, is married with two children.

Jonathan leads the strategic and policy projects for Patients Rising in its fight for access to vital therapies and services for patients with life-threatening and chronic diseases. His commentaries on health care are encouraging policymakers to embrace reform proposals that put patients first.
A Fellow with the University of Southern California Annenberg Center for Communication Leadership and Policy, Jonathan has served as a featured on-air commentator for ABC News, NBC News, Fox News Channel and CNN. He was also a featured analyst on National Public Radio, numerous national radio programs and international networks. A contributor to the Huffington Post, his editorial commentaries have appeared in more than 25 daily newspaper outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, Investor’s Business Daily, Sacramento Bee, Los Angeles Daily News, San Francisco Chronicle, Washington Times, Houston Chronicle, Dallas Morning News, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Detroit News and Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Wilcox has written extensively for numerous corporate executives, including the Chairman and CEO of Merrill Lynch, the CEO of Coldwell Banker, the Executive Vice President of Wells Fargo Bank and the Deputy President of McDonnell-Douglas. He has authored remarks for Ronald Reagan, George Deukmejian and former FCC Commissioner Andrew Barrett. Wilcox was also a leading speechwriter for California Governor Pete Wilson.

Terry Wilcox helps patients find their voice and become advocates for their health care.
As co-founder and executive director of Patients Rising, Terry manages the organization’s day-to-day operations to help every patient gain access to the right treatment. An expert in multimedia storytelling, Terry uses her background in entertainment to present powerful personal patient narratives. She has a track record of building coalitions with survivors, caregivers and medical professionals. Her regular column in Women magazine profiles unsung patient advocates who are making a difference in their disease community. She has been interviewed by “The Stupid Cancer Show,” featured as a guest blogger for Critical Mass during “National Young Adult Cancer Week,” and served as the creative force and executive producer of Omni Health’s “Understanding Cancer” video series.
Terry’s career in patient advocacy was inspired by her mentor Selma Schimmel, considered by many as the “original” young adult survivor advocate. As executive director for Vital Options International, Terry advanced Selma’s legacy at the nonprofit cancer communication, education and advocacy organization. From 2008 to 2014, Terry worked alongside Selma as creative director at Vital Options International and supervising producer for The Group Room.
Prior to her time at Vital Options International, Terry specialized as a talent producer and event manager in the entertainment industry, including time as Talent Producer at TV Land Awards, Director of Talent Relations for G4 Network, and Talent Executive at Celebrity Connection. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from The Boston Conservancy.
Terry lives in Washington, D.C. with her husband, Jonathan, and twin boys, Jackson and James.
